Cooperation of the State Committee with the US Department of Energy in the framework of the implementation of the Memorandum 12 june 2020

The State Forensic Examination Committee joined the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding with the US Department of Energy. The document provides the development of cooperation in preventing illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials, which was signed by the State Border Committee and the US Department of Energy on August 9, 2011.

The US Department of Energy is the Executive Department of the US Government responsible for energy and nuclear security. The main tasks of the US Department of Energy are to ensure energy security, conduct scientific research, develop and implement innovative technologies, and protect the environment.

Since 2015 the State Committee has been actively developing a new direction in forensic activity for our country– nuclear forensics.

A special group has been created and is functioning in the State Committee, whose specialists participate in investigative and other legal proceedings, operational-search activities when detecting (detaining) ownerless sources of ionizing radiation and in investigating crimes involving radioactive substances, conduct «traditional forensic» examinations of contaminated or potentially contaminated objects.

Only in 2019 the group’s specialists took part in such examinations four times. And due to the coordinated work of the state bodies in all cases the sources of ionizing radiation were timely detected and removed, which avoided a serious threat to the life and health of citizens.

Cooperation of the State Committee with the US Department of Energy in this issue will strengthen and expand interaction between the two countries and develop nuclear forensics in the Republic of Belarus.
